The efficacy of any topical medication is related to the concentration of the medication, the vehicle the mode in which it is transported, the active ingredient, inherent strength and anatomic location. For the topical medication, topical steroids have a broad role. Topical steroids are classified based on potency and the potency is inherent to the molecule not the concentration. The class of the steroid is the strength and the steroids within any class are equivalent in strength. Topical corticosteroids from super high potency is Clobetasol, from high potency Fluocinonide, from medium potency Triamcinolone, from mid-low Aclometasone, and from lowest potency Hydrocortisone. There are many ways to apply corticosteroids including spot lesions.
