2. Acne and Rosacea

This condition causes persistent redness over the areas of the face and nose that normally blushes: mainly the forehead, the chin, and the lower half of the nose. The tiny blood vessels in these areas enlarge and become more visible through the skin, appearing like tiny red lines, telangiectasia. Pimples that look like teenage acne can occur. Rosacea occurs most often between the ages of 30 and 60, especially in people with fair skin.

Acne is the largest market segment of the dermatological diagnostics market accounting for 28.7% of the total therapeutics market followed by psoriasis (26.4%), rosacea (14.9%), and atopic dermatitis (9%). The overall dermatological diagnostics and therapeutics industry is forecast to witness tremendous growth rate and reach $38 million by the year 2013 with annual growth rate of 8.7%.

4. Dermatological nail diseases

Nail diseases are distinct from diseases of the skin. Although nails are a skin appendage, they have their own signs and symptoms which may relate to other medical conditions. Nail conditions that show signs of infection or inflammation require medical assistance. Deformity or disease of the nails may be referred to as onychosis. Other nail diseases are Onycholysis, onychomycosis, tinea unguium, allergic contact dermatitis.Onycholysis is the painless separation of the nail from the nail bed. Onychomycosis is very difficult to eradicate.

The market size and statistics for the nail disease related industries reached $53bn, annually growing by 2.4%. The industry is dominated by non-employers, which are expected to make up 92.7% of companies in the industry.

5. Autoimmune diseases

Autoimmune diseases arise from an abnormal immune response of the body against substances and tissues normally present in the body called autoimmunity. The body's immune system is a complex network of specialized cells and organs which defends against foreign substances and invaders. The foreign substances and invaders can include bacteria, parasites, some cancer cells, and transplant tissue. Normally, the body's immune system only reacts to foreign substances and invaders in order to protect the body. When the immune system malfunctions, the body mistakes its own tissues as foreign and it produces immune cells lymphocytes and antibodies that target and attack those tissues. Autoimmune diseases usually fluctuate between periods of remission or flare-ups. The treatment of autoimmune diseases is typically with immunosuppression—medication that decreases the immune response.

The global inflammation and autoimmunity therapy market by condition based on the MAT (moving annual total) until the third quarter of 2014. In that year, the global gout therapy market was worth 0.8 billion U.S. dollars. Autoimmune diseases are defined as the body's own immune system attacks its own tissues which can cause inflammation.

6. Non melanoma skin cancer and precancerous conditions of skin

Non-melanoma skin cancer is a malignant tumour that starts in cells of the skin. Malignant means that it can spread, or metastasize, to other parts of the body. Pre-cancerous conditions are diseases or syndromes that might develop into a cancer, so it’s important to monitor your health. For basal cell carcinoma, two or more of the following features may be present, an open sore that bleeds, oozes, or crusts and remains open for several weeks, a reddish, raised patch or irritated area that may crust or itch, but rarely hurts, a shiny pink, red, pearly white, or translucent bump, a pink growth with an elevated border and crusted central indentation, a scar-like, white, yellow, or waxy area, often with a poorly defined border. Squamous cell carcinoma can often crust, bleed, and appear as, a wart-like growth, a persistent, scaly red patch with irregular borders that may bleed easily, an open sore that persists for weeks, an elevated growth with a rough surface and a central depression.

Researchers estimate that 5.4 million cases of non-melanoma skin cancer, including basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, were diagnosed in 3.3 million people in the United States in 2012. It is estimated that 137,310 new cases of melanoma, 63,440 noninvasive (in situ) and 73,870 invasive, will be diagnosed in 2015. Five-year survival rates for regional and distant stage melanomas are 63 percent and 16 percent, respectively. The World Health Organization estimates that more than 65,000 people a year worldwide die from melanoma. The annual cost of treating non-melanoma skin cancer in the U.S. is estimated at $4.8 billion, while the average annual cost of treating melanoma is estimated at $3.3 billion.

8. Principles of diagnosis

The efficacy of any topical medication is related to the concentration of the medication, the vehicle the mode in which it is transported, the active ingredient, inherent strength and anatomic location. For the topical medication, topical steroids have a broad role. Topical steroids are classified based on potency and the potency is inherent to the molecule not the concentration. The class of the steroid is the strength and the steroids within any class are equivalent in strength. Topical corticosteroid from super high potency is Clobetasol, from high potency Fluocinonide, from medium potency Triamcinolone, from mid-low Aclometasone, and from lowest potency Hydrocortisone. There are many ways to apply corticosteroids including spot lesions.

The Dermatologists industry has increasingly expanded into cosmetic dermatology, with more dermatologists offering anti-aging procedures such as dermabrasion, laser treatments and Botox. For each dollar spent on labor, about $0.10 is spent on capital. Labor costs account for 31.4% of total industry revenue, whereas depreciation expenses represent 3.1%. A high level of personal care exists in the Dermatologists industry, since patient-doctor interaction is necessary in order to improve health.

10. Principles of management

There must be due consideration of the predisposing factors in evaluating a treatment for a skin condition. Under treatment is as over treatment, especially for acute inflammatory processes, should be urged. The importance of preventive measures in the treatment of skin disorders is frequently overlooked. So have to manage all the systems like vehicle selection, quantity, medication periods and cost considerations.

About 75.0% of physicians are located in metropolitan areas, while the remaining 25.0% are located in rural areas. As of 2012, there were 9,641 practicing dermatologists in the United States. The number of people who used a skin doctor (dermatologist) within the last 12 months in the United States (USA) from spring 2008 to spring 2014. In spring 2008, the number of people who have shown doctor (dermatologist) within a period of 12 months amounted to around 28.93 million.

11. Diet in Dermatology

Diet has an important role to play in many skin disorders, and dermatologists are frequently faced with the difficulty of separating myth from fact when it comes to dietary advice for their patients. Patients in India are often anxious about what foods to consume, and what to avoid, in the hope that, no matter how impractical or difficult this may be, following this dictum will cure their disease. There are certain disorders where one or more components in food are central to the pathogenesis, e.g. dermatitis herpetiformis, wherein dietary restrictions constitute the cornerstone of treatment. A brief list, although not comprehensive, of other disorders where diet may have a role to play includes atopic dermatitis, acne vulgaris, psoriasis vulgaris, pemphigus, urticaria, pruritus, allergic contact dermatitis, fish odor syndrome, toxic oil syndrome, fixed drug eruption, genetic and metabolic disorders (phenylketonuria, tyrosinemia, homocystinuria, galactosemia, Refsum's disease, G6PD deficiency, xanthomas, gout and porphyria), nutritional deficiency disorders (kwashiorkar marasmus, phrynoderma, pellagra, scurvy, acrodermatitis enteropathica, carotenemia and lycopenemia) and miscellaneous disorders such as vitiligo, aphthous ulcers, cutaneous vasculitis and telogen effluvium. From a practical point of view, it will be useful for the dermatologist to keep some dietary information handy to deal with the occasional patient who does not seem to respond in spite of the best, scientific and evidence-based therapy.

12. Veterinary Dermatology

Animals are susceptible to hundreds of skin disorders. Recognizing the different conditions and the application of current and state of the art therapies requires advanced training. Veterinary dermatology is one of eighteen specialties recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Doctors at Dermatology for Animals have devoted their professional careers to the understanding and treatment of allergies and skin diseases in animals. Some skin tumours, such as scc, can be treated using cryotherapy or medical therapy. Others, such as epitheliotrophic lymphoma, can be treated with chemotherapy. Otitis externa is a common manifestation of allergic skin disease, but may also be associated with middle ear infections or tumours of the ear canal. Primary secretory Otitis Media is a recently recognised disease that affects Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. They have a characteristic bulging of the tympanic membrane into the distal aspect of the horizontal ear canal. Treatment for this condition is the surgical placement of grommets (ventilation tubes) in the ear drum to allow equalisation of pressure and drainage of the sterile mucous-like fluid into the nasopharynx via the Eustachian tube. Severe anaphylactic reactions due to bee and wasp stings are rare, but potentially fatal to pets.

13. Psychodermatology: The Mind and Skin Connection

A psychodermatologic disorder is a condition that involves an interaction between the mind and skin. Psychodermatologic disorders fall into three categories:-

Psychophysiologic disorders or psychosomatic disorder, are of two types: primary psychiatric disorders and secondary psychiatric disorders. Psychophysiologic disorders (psoriasis and eczema) are associated with skin problems that are not directly connected to the mind but that react to emotional states, such as stress. Primary psychiatric disorders involve psychiatric conditions that results in self-induced cutaneous manifestations, such as trichotillomania and delusions of parasitosis. Secondary psychiatric disorders are associated with disfiguring skin disorders. The disfigurement results in psychologic problems, such as decreased self-esteem, depression or social phobia.
